<image:caption>This cottage was built by Earl Wixon. He probably used it as part of his antiques business. In the 1970s, property was purchased by Eileen Dickenson and she used this cottage to store her deceased husband’s art collection. In the 1990s, this property was owned by Lucia Nevai (a fiction writer) when Kenneth Smith visited and painted this small water color. Kenneth B. Smith has a website where he shows several more images painted during this visit. Next the cottage was used as a painting studio by Patrick Casey who also painted scenery near the cottage. Gift of Lucia Nevai.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Chatham Art</image:title>
<image:caption>OUIS BOUCHE 1896 - 1969 Louis Bouché (1896-1969) was born into a tradition of artists. His grandfather was a minor Barbizon painter and his father, who brought the family from France to New York, worked as an interior designer. The Bouchés visited Europe regularly and lived in France from 1909 to 1915. Louis studied art at several schools in Paris and spent a year at the Art Student's League in New York. Uninspired by the "academic" training at the League, he and Alexander Brook left the school and rented a studio together. Through the Penguin Club, organized by Walt Kuhn, where artists could exhibit their work and trade ideas, they met, among others, Jules Pascin, Arthur B. Davies, and Edward Hopper, and the collector John Quinn. Bouché is known as a painter of the American scene, recording the daily pleasures of rural and suburban life. In a 1962 New York Times review Stuart Preston described him as "an American realist who finds poetry, but not obvious poetry, in the commonplace." Guy Pène du Bois had similar feelings about the work and wrote in the catalogue for Bouché's first show at Kraushaar: Louis Bouché is one of those fortunate painters who can do the simple things they like without feeling like Corot's 'specialists,' that they might better be doing a crucifixion.... Subject matter with him seems to happen, comes to him, is around.... He does not try to prove anything, I am sure, beyond his delight in the thing before him. That is enough. <image:title>Albany Art</image:title>
<image:caption>Painting by William Page. This is believed a self-portrait. This is based on comparison with a self-portrait published in “George Innes and the Visionary Landscape” by Adrienne Baxter Bell, National Academy of Design (2003) page 26. Page and Inness shared a studio building in Rome in 1851. Page apparently had a great impact on Inness’ philosophy. .Ownership of Painting This painting was purchased from an antique shop in Albany NY about 40 years ago. Label on back of frame indicates it was previously owned by Marshall Pepoon. “William Page, The American Titian” by Joshua C Taylor, University of Chicago Press (1957) on page 271 has the following listing: The following portraits owned by Marshall Pepoon were exhibited at the National Academy: Portrait of a Lady, 1846, No 147; Portrait of a Gentleman, 1846, No 30; Portrait of a Gentleman, 1848, No 100. “…very luminous and fleshlike” (Literary World III, No 14 (1848) 267. It seems likely that the above portrait is one of those exhibited when owned by Pepoon. Marshall Pepoon had a large collection of paintings which was sold in NYC in 1881. Pepoon is often mentioned in regard to arts in NYC in the late 19th century. Pepoon’s diary covering a European trip is in the library at Winterthur. Frame This painting’s frame appears to be original and is a glorious period frame in good condition.</image:caption>

My family moved to Woodstock, N.Y. when I was eight, and I was inspired from an early age by the excitement and creativity of the Woodstock art environment. I took a year off from college to study at the Academia De Belle Arte in Florence, Italy where my mother had been a student before me. After college I married Painter-sculptor Edward Chavez, an abstract artist, and when our daughter Maia (now also an artist) was in college, I studied art and art history at Yale University.Landscape and wildlife are my inspiration. With fisherman Dick Strain I am fortunate enough to travel to many of the world's wildest places. I always carry a back pack with painting supplies. Pleine Aire painting provides the source material for my studio works.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Under one of the armrests is written in pencil:”Made by Warren L. Adams, Troy, NY, b 1803 d 1858 c 1856.” This sofa was purchased at auction of household items from Lansingburgh, NY. This pencil inscription is obviously not written by the maker, but likely by a descendent, perhaps his daughter. It was clearly written by someone familiar with Warren Adams personal history. This may well be the only product known to be associated with Adams production.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Decorative Arts - 18th century screw plate, 17 inches long</image:title>
<image:caption>This screw plate was used to cut threads on the outside of rods and to cut threads on the inside of holes. This screw plate precedes standardized threads so a mechanic would need a matching pair of a tap and die. Such screw plates were important tools for early clock and gun makers.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Miscellaneous - Marble portrait by J A Jackson of Joshua Sears (1791-1857) a prominent Boston merchant</image:title>
<image:caption>This portrait was commissioned by Sear’s business partner, Alpheus Hardy in 1875 who remarked it was an excellent likeness. Thanks to John f. McGuigan (Harpswell, Maine) for identifying the sitter and circumstances of it commissioning. John Adams Jackson (November 5, 1825 — August 30, 1879) was a noted American sculptor. Jackson was born in Bath, Maine, and apprenticed to a machinist in Boston, where he gave evidence of talent by modelling a bust of Thomas Buchanan Read. There he studied linear and geometrical drawing and produced crayon portraits. Going abroad in 1853, he visited Florence, where he created several portrait busts in marble, then went to Paris in 1854, where he studied academic life drawing at the Académie Suisse. In 1858 he went to New York City, remaining until 1860, when he moved to Florence, Italy, which was afterward his home. Jackson's portrait busts include those of Daniel Webster (1851); Adelaide Phillips (1853); Wendell Phillips (1854); "Eve and the Dead Abel" (1862); "Autumn"; "Cupid Stringing his Bow"; "Titania and Nick Bottom"; "The Culprit Fay" (many times repeated); "Dawn" (repeated); "Peace"; "Cupid on a Swan"; "The Morning Glory" (a medallion repeated fourteen times); "Reading Girl" (1869); "Nusidora" (Vienna Exposition, 1873); "Hylas" (1875); and "Il Pastorello," an Abruzzi peasant-boy with his goat. He designed a statue of Dr. Elisha Kane, the arctic explorer, for the Kane monument association (1860); a group intended for the southern gate-house of the former Croton Lower Reservoir in Central Park, New York (1867, not installed);[1] and the Civil War soldiers' monument at Lynn, Massachusetts (1874). Jackson died in Pracchia in Tuscany on August 30, 1879.</image:caption>

<image:title>Miscellaneous - Budd Tavern as it appeared in August 2019</image:title>
<image:caption>Budd Tavern, built c 1808 Budd Tavern is located on route US 20 in Brainard, NY (a few miles east of Nassau, NY). This house was built c 1808, perhaps in association with the Toll Bridge (Rensselaer Bridge Company, incorporated in 1808) built by Jeremiah Brainard at the time over the Kinderhook Creek. The house foundation makes use of the foundation of an earlier house which faced east, i.e. overlooked the Kinderhook Creek. The house is located at the site where David Brainerd stayed for a few month while he preached to the Mohicans at Kaunaumeek, a Mohican village about 1.5 miles away.</image:caption>
