Oil on canvas, 16 inches by 20 inches, signed LR.

This painting is a puzzle. It is signed in black block letter “BLANCH” and similarly written on back of canvas. This not the usual signature of Arnold Blanch which includes his first name and is written in cursive. Style of painting and the style of the signature (block letters in black) is more like that of Charles Rosen. The house shown may be one of the houses in Woodstock occupied by Blanch. We welcome help from anyone who has a suggestion of what is going on. Thanks to Tom Wolf.

Louis Bouche 1896 - 1969

Louis Bouché (1896-1969) was born into a tradition of artists. His grandfather was a minor Barbizon painter and his father, who brought the family from France to New York, worked as an interior designer. The Bouchés visited Europe regularly and lived in France from 1909 to 1915. Louis studied art at several schools in Paris and spent a year at the Art Student's League in New York. Uninspired by the "academic" training at the League, he and Alexander Brook left the school and rented a studio together. Through the Penguin Club, organized by Walt Kuhn, where artists could exhibit their work and trade ideas, they met, among others, Jules Pascin, Arthur B. Davies, and Edward Hopper, and the collector John Quinn. Bouché is known as a painter of the American scene, recording the daily pleasures of rural and suburban life. In a 1962 New York Times review Stuart Preston described him as "an American realist who finds poetry, but not obvious poetry, in the commonplace." Guy Pène du Bois had similar feelings about the work and wrote in the catalogue for Bouché's first show at Kraushaar: Louis Bouché is one of those fortunate painters who can do the simple things they like without feeling like Corot's 'specialists,' that they might better be doing a crucifixion.... Subject matter with him seems to happen, comes to him, is around.... He does not try to prove anything, I am sure, beyond his delight in the thing before him. That is enough. John Carroll 1892 - 1959

A painter best known for his portraits, John Carroll was born en route through Kansas and grew up in San Francisco, where he studied art for three years at the Mark Hopkins Art Academy, transferring to the University of California at Berkeley for two years. He then studied art with Frank Duveneck in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Carroll settled for a time in New York, where he designed stained glass for Tiffany Studios and was a member of the Woodstock art colony. He received critical acclaim for his work at the Pennsylvania Academy Of The Arts in Philadelphia, and became and instructor at the Art Students League, then went to Europe in 1927 on a Guggenheim Fellowship, followed by a number of years as head of the paintings department at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts. Returning to New York, he divided his time between his New York City studio and his farm in East Chatham, New York.

An important example of American Barbizon, "The Departure of the Mayflower" won a medal when it was displayed in the fine art galleries of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, where it was identified as "The Return of the Mayflower." The left half of the painting can be seen on the bottom row to the far right in a photograph that was published in William Walton's World's Columbian Exposition; Art and Architecture. The artist put on the present oak frame for the 1913 traveling exhibition "Paintings by Alexander Harrison and Birge Harrison;" it retains multiple shipping labels from that tour. The simple black molding conforms with those on frames described by Harrison in "On Framing Pictures," a chapter in his book, Landscape Painting. Identical frames may be seen in period photographs of Harrison's art as it was hung at Jane and Ralph Radcliffe-Whitehead's Santa Barbara home, Arcady and their Byrdcliffe home, White Pines.
